The project

The TOGeThER project aims to support the autonomy and independence of people with cognitive, physical and social frailty through technology. In particular, it aims to combine the concept of “social housing,” or an emerging housing concept that integrates autonomy enabling pathways and the active involvement of community networks to counter the social isolation of people with frailty, and innovative assistive technologies. The project aims to enable people with frailty to remain independent for longer, ensuring their health and safety with an innovative home care model.

The challenge

At the territorial level in Trentino, macro-areas of primary needs have been identified for vulnerable people living in small villages or isolated locations, where there is a lack of independence, services, social and technological support, and healthcare assistance.

This gave rise to the concept of social housing, an emerging housing intervention that integrates pathways for autonomy “enabling,” sustainable living practices, and the active involvement of community networks, aiming to prevent social and relational isolation and the related issues.

  • Raise awareness on social inclusion
  • Promote the co-housing methodology
  • Integrate social housing and technology

L’approccio

Starting from a community development phase that actively involved key members, design ideas were generated to share everyone’s needs, define a common goal, and identify the appropriate technologies and services to address those needs.

Properties were prepared to host the user community, following a model that is constantly updated based on user feedback (cyclical residency) and monitored through semi-structured interviews.

From a technical and structural standpoint, the project is divided into two main development areas: the social side for user management, and the technological side for facility control through the installation of specific sensors.

Results

To meet all project requirements and objectives, following several co-creation phases with all partners, two outcomes were developed:

  • A web platform serving as a management system through which administrators can manage users, tasks, and events within the facility. Additionally, it allows citizens to access project information and available events;

A smartphone application for facility users to manage their own tasks and events[.
