The project

The INTenSE project aims to educate, equip, and train healthcare and social care professionals across Europe to better support people with dementia through innovative learning approaches and the use of ICT tools that allow for exploring the lived experience of individuals with dementia.

The challenge

With the increasing prevalence of people living with dementia, it becomes essential to better understand their needs and create environments where they can receive the best possible care. It is scientifically proven that experiencing the self is the most effective way to foster genuine empathy and understanding, which in turn drives practice change, reduces issues, and improves the quality of care.

INTenSE proposes an innovative educational practice that incorporates experiential and relational techniques to enhance skills and competencies, while raising awareness and understanding of dementia.

  • Raise awareness about dementia
  • “Experience” dementia through ICT
  • Create a space for mutual learning

L’approccio

The innovation of the INTenSE project is based on the analysis of the concept of self-experience derived from George Kelly’s Personal Construct Psychology (1955): explaining dementia through methods that allow individuals to experience its symptoms can contribute to increasing dementia knowledge in a more immediate and effective way.

Another innovative element is the involvement of Role-Playing Games and Theatre Workshops, which simulate symptoms through the art of acting, alongside training programs that incorporate Virtual Dementia Tours (VDT).

Results

Through co-creation and co-design approaches and using Agile methodology, the INTenSE project led to the development of three key outcomes:

  • An e-booklet on self-experience practices for dementia care
  • A Dementia Simulation Toolkit
  • An e-learning platform for self-experience practices

These resources are available on the web platform, which meets the project requirements and allows all users free access to the materials created to develop new self-experience techniques.
